First container vessel Hamad Port’s first container vessel,
the MSC Esthi berthed at Container Terminal 1.
At 337m long with a beam of 46m, a draft of
15m and a capacity of 9,200 TEUs, the MSC Esthi
is the largest container vessel, to dock in
Qatar. The arrival marked the opening
of Container 1 and the commencement of full
operations at Hamad Port on 1 December 2016.
Full operations 1 December 2016 marked the start of full
operations at Hamad Port. An opening reception
was attended by HE the Prime Minister and
and Minister of Interior, HE the Minister of Transport
Transport and Communications, Cabinet Ministers,
NPP Steering Committee members and NPP Management,
to witness the arrival of the MSC Esthi.
Early operations The first ‘ro-ro’ cargo vessel arrived on
24 December 2015 and the ship’s arrival was
marked by an inauguration ceremony attended by
HE the Prime Minister and Minister of Interior
Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al-Thani,
HE the Minister of Transport
Jassim bin Saif Ahmed al-Sulaiti, ,
other Minister’s and Steering Committee Members.
Early operations The first commercial vessel arrived
at Hamad Port on 24 December 2015.
This date marks the opening of the
port for commercial vessels and is a
major milestone for the Project.
Hamad Port The first ship to enter Hamad Port arrived on 19 July
2015,delivering the first four Ship to Shore Cranes
and eight Rubber Tyred Gantry Cranes from
Shanghai.The ships arrival was witnessed by the
Prime Minister and Minister of Interior HE Sheikh
Abdullah bin Nasser Al-Thani, the Minister of
Transport,HE Jassim Bin Saif Al Sulaiti, the New
Port Project Steering Committee members and other
dignitaries.MWANI, supervised the arrival of the
first ship in to Hamad Port.

Hamad Port The New Port Project celebrated the flooding of the
Port Basin at a ceremony on site where Deputy
Emir HH Sheikh Abdullah bin Hamad Al Thani
unveiled the name of the New Port as ‘Hamad Port’.
Dignitaries in attendance at the ceremony included
the Prime Minister and Interior Minister
HE Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani,
the Minister of Transport and Chairman of the NPP
Steering Committee, HE Jassim bin Saif Al Sulaiti,
number of other Ministers, Ambassadors and
Officials.
The Excavated Port Basin Excavation of the 17m deep Port Basin
was completed in January 2015. A total of
71 million3 of sand and rock material was
excavated with 35,224 pre-cast blocks
placed to construct the quay wall.
Filling the Port Basin The filling of the Port Basin commenced
on 9 February with approximately 76 million m³
of water required to fill both the Port Basin
and Access Channel, which is now completed.
Completing the Quay Wall In August 2014, China Harbour Engineering
Company completed construction of the
Port quay wall. The completed quay wall
stands 8.5km long and 22m high. A total of
35,224 pre-cast concrete blocks, each
weighing between 60 and 110 tons are
installed in the quay wall.
New Port Project
On 19 June 2007 His Highness Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani, Emir of the State of Qatar, issued Emiri Decree No. 37, setting forth the creation of one of the world's largest greenfield port developments. Strategically located south of Doha, the QAR 27 Billion (USD 7.4 Billion) megaproject, which includes a new port, a new base for the Qatar Emiri Naval Forces and the Qatar Economic Zone 3, will span a 26.5 square kilometer area.
Award of Strategic Food Security Facility Contract
The New Port Project (NPP) Steering Committee and AlJaber Engineering (JEC) signed a contract for designing and constructing food security facilities and warehouses at Hamad Port at a cost of QAR 1.6billion. HE Jassim Saif Ahmed Al-Sulaiti, Minister of Transport and Communications and Chairman of the NPP Steering Committee witnessed the signing ceremony, held at the Ministry headquarters today.
The facilities of the project will be developed and constructed on an area of approximately 53 hectares (about 530,000 square meters). The project consists of specialized facilities for the processing, manufacturing and refining of rice, raw sugar and edible oils. These products will be available for local, regional and global use. Hamad Port commenced general cargo operations on 15 October 2016 at the General Cargo Terminal, allowing for further operations to be transferred from Doha Port.

Port Basin Flooding and Naming of the Port Ceremony
The New Port Project celebrated the flooding of the Port Basin at a ceremony on site where Deputy Emir HH Sheikh Abdullah bin Hamad Al Thani unveiled the name of the New Port as ‘Hamad Port’.
